Injuries sustained in Fourth Street accident

Three people were taken to Austin Medical Center Thursday night following a two-vehicle accident in the parking lot of Kwik Trip on Fourth Street Northwest.

According to Austin Police reports, the accident took place at around 7:30 p.m. when, according to witnesses, a van driven by 84-year-old Arnold Johnson, who was driving northbound, was attempting to make a left-hand turn into Kwik Trip.

According to the reports Johnson, who was attempting to brake, accidently hit the accelerator and struck a parked, four-door Suzuki driven by Ann Wyatt, 48, and her 12-year-old son, who was sitting in the back. The collision slammed the vehicle into a cement post and a cage containing propane tanks.

Johnson was helped to a stretcher and reportedly complained of head injuries, while Austin firefighters had to use the jaws of life to get the driver’s side off to extricate Wyatt and her son, who also complained of injuries and head injuries.

According to the report, witnesses at the scene estimated the van to be going around 40 mph when it struck the car.

The case has been forwarded to the city attorney for review.
