Herbert Benson, 95
Herbert Benson, 95, of Blooming Prairie, died at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester on April 1, 2009.
He was born March 17, 1914 to Ole Knute and Sophia (Thompson) Benson in Newry Township, Minn. and baptized at Red Oak Grove Lutheran Church. When Herb was ten years old, the family moved to a farm at the south edge of Blooming Prairie. He walked, leading a team of horses pulling a load of silage, to their new home. Herbert was confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Blooming Prairie where he married Marguerite Benson on April 27, 1942. To this union six children were born. Marguerite died on Jan. 19, 1956. On Aug. 10, 1958, he married Luella Stephan Duel. They had a son together. Herbert farmed all his life with his brothers on the family farm. Upon retiring, he was employed at the Farmer’s Elevator and drove school bus. A good father and husband, he was a “fixit” man, loved to travel, had a great interest in politics, cars, gardening, fishing, reading and golfing. He belonged to Masonic Lodge #123 for over fifty years and was a member of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include his wife, Luella Benson, Blooming Prairie; seven children, Hazel (Jerry) Hester, Lakeside, Calif., Ronald Benson, Mankato, Lorie (Ted) Ciszek, Loomis, Calif., Vernon (Anne) Benson, Apple Valley, Sherry Kruckeberg, Minneapolis, Allan (Melody) Benson, Pequot Lakes, Gary (Denise) Benson, Clarks Grove; four step-children, Deanna (Cliff) Peterson, Tempe, Ariz., Rebecca (Phil) Osborn, Laguna Woods, Calif., Barbara Duel, Phoenix, Ariz., William S. (Robin) Duel, Minneapolis; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Benson and Ella Benson, both of Blooming Prairie; 25 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. 
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Marguerite; two brothers, Kenneth and Orville; three sisters, Inez, Margaret and Thelma; granddaughter, Dyann Hester Miller.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 4, 2009 at First Lutheran Church in Blooming Prairie with pastors, Heidi Heimgartner and Karl Korbel officiating. Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m., Friday, April 3, 2009 at Worlein Blooming Prairie Funeral Home followed by a Masonic service at 7 p.m. and visitation one hour prior to the service at church on Saturday. Interment is at First Lutheran Cemetery in Blooming Prairie. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to donors choice.
