Hayfield sprinter has a big day at Lions Club Invite

HAYFIELD — While the weather was cold at the Hayfield Lions Club track and field Invite, it sure didn’t slow down the Hayfield girls top sprinter Thursday.

Senior Genessa Heide didn’t miss a beat as she took the two easy first place finishes in the 100- and 200-meter dash, took first in the high jump, and boosted the 400-meter relay team to a first place finish.

Heide won the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.33 seconds, edging out her teammate Jamie Drake, who had a time of 14.06 seconds. In the 200-meter dash Heide took first with a time of 27.88 seconds, as she once again edged out Drake who finished with a time of 29.70 seconds.

With such large margins of victory, Heide had to find her own motivation.

“I tried to imagine people running fast next to me and when I’m running I think ‘keep going,’” she said.

Heide, who went to state last season in both sprints, is focused on improving her times from last year. On Thursday she bested both of her performances from last season.

“They’re better than last year, but last year was colder,” she said. “I’m taking my times from last year and at each meet I’m hoping to do just as good or better. Hopefully my times get better and I make it to state again.”

In the shot put, Hayfield’s Kiley Severson came through on her second of two throws to top GMLOS’s Ella Noterman, whose best throw was 35 feet.

After a throw of 34 feet, Severson landed a throw of 35 feet, four inches to take first in the event.

“I definitely wanted to get first,” said Severson, who advanced to state in the shot put last season. “It’s nice throwing last so you can see what everybody else gets.”

In discus, Severson had to settle for third place by less than a foot when she had a throw of 96-8. Kristina Stier of GMLOS won the discus with a throw of 97-4.5.

All throwers had to battle a stiff wind.

“The wind has been like that all week. So it kind of sucks to not have a good practice and then have to throw in a meet,” Severson said.

But still, Severson was glad to be throwing outside for the first time in a meet this year.

“It feels good to be outside. We had our first indoor meet and it just wasn’t the same as being outdoors,” she said.

The Hayfield girls took second out of four teams and the Hayfield boys took first.
