Today is St. Patrick’s Day, a time for leprechauns, four-leaf clovers, corned beef and cabbage and green beer.
For the latter two, Austin has you covered.
At B&J Bar, owners are giving away green Jell-O shots this evening, while serving up corned beef sandwiches, Irish stew and green beer. The restaurant, located at 112 Fourth Ave. N.E., is open from 10 a.m. to 1 a.m.
“I can make any beer green as long as it’s not Guinness,” said Peter Werner, co-owner. “We kind of have a history of being the place to be on St. Patrick’s Day.”
At Lefty’s Bar, 421 10th St. N.E., $1 half-pints of green Bud Light will be the special during its regular hours of 10 a.m. to 1 a.m.
“It’s great,” said owner Jeff Daily about celebrating St. Patrick’s Day at Lefty’s. “I think a lot of Irish people come out, so we’ll probably have a good crowd.”
It doesn’t stop there.
At Hiawatha Bar, 433 10th St. N.E., customers can enjoy free corned beef and cabbage beginning around noon until it’s gone. The bar is open from 8 a.m. to 1 a.m.
And for green beer?
“Back in the day, our distributor used to make green beer in the keg, but that kind of went out,” said night bartender Tony Erickson. “If somebody wanted it, we could probably find some food coloring and put in a drop or two.”
At Torge’s Live, 1701 Fourth St. N.W., customers can order some corned beef and cabbage, then wash it down with $2.50 pints of green Michelob Golden Light or a 16-ounce aluminum bottle of Bud Light, complete with a clover design for $3.50.
Crystal Claussen, bartender at Torge’s, said that green beer is still a popular choice for St. Patrick’s Day.
“We run a special on it, so people drink it,” she said.
Torge’s is open from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m.
