Sunday alcohol legislation dries up for now

Last week ended in frustration for State Rep. Tom Anzelc (DFL-03A).
There is still no hearing on his proposed Sunday liquor sales legislation.
It is, Anzelc said, “controversial.”
That it is. A quick survey last week of three Austin liquor stores resulted in no interest in remaining open Sundays.
Monday through Saturday was a long enough schedule, according to the liquor store owners.
That and the fact there are bars and restaurants with Sunday liquor sales licenses to serve customers wanting an intoxicating beverage on Sunday closed the door, at least locally, on interest in Anzelc’s legislation.
Anzelc’s legislation would dedicate funding for children’s social services.
“They don’t like dedicated funding either,” Anzelc said of fellow legislators’ disinterest in his bill.
The legislator said the genesis of his proposed Sunday liquor sales bill is the need to “protect children.”
“We need legal representation for all children in child protection cases,” Anzelc said.
And the state representative should know: He’s a former commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Human Services.
So Anzelc’s idea is grounded. “I can’t even get a hearing for the legislation,” he said.
