Pacelli High school will honor it’s former standout athletes and alumni at a ceremony in Corcoran Center June 19 after the Pacelli Golf Day at River Oaks Golf Course.
Dinner will be served at around 5:30 p.m. and the Pacelli Athletic Hall of Fame and Distinguished Alumni Induction will take place shortly after.
According to Pacelli athletic director Jim Parlin, the following athletes will be enshrined into the hall of fame: Jim Grebin, Gary Duren, Joe Christopherson, Jerry Ulwelling, and Jenny Blaser. Being honored as distinguished alumni will be Shirley (Weber) Cahill and Richard Lein
Jim Grebin
The 1984 Pacelli grad was a state track champion in 1983 and 1984 in the four by 100-meter relay, the four by 400-meter relay and the 400-meter run. The Pacelli track team also won state both of those seasons.
Grebin was also a three-year letter winner in football and basketball, and he competed in track at the University of Northern Iowa. He was very active in getting a new track built in St. Charles.
Grebin is deceased and his son, Brooks, will receive the plaque for him.
Gary Duren
The 1972 Pacelli grad was part of three basketball teams that took third place in the Minnesota High School League Independent Tournaments. Duren was the only Pacelli basketball player to be named to the All-State Tournament team twice, and he scored 33 points in one of his game’s at the state tourney — which is an all-time high for a Pacelli player at state.
In golf, Duren took third place at state and he compiled 33 meet medals in his five-year high school career. He won the Minnesota Jr. Tournament and became one of three golfers to win the Austin City Open three years in a row.
Joe Christopherson
The 1981 grad was a linebacker, running back, punter, and kicker for the state runner-up Pacelli football team in 1980.
“He was never off the field,” Parlin said.
He went on to play linebacker at the University of Minnesota on scholarship.
Christopherson was all-conference in football and basketball while at Pacelli.
Jerry Ulwelling
The 1964 Pacelli grad was a three-year starter for the football and basketball teams. He played on the 1964 team that was runner-up in the Minnesota State High School Independent Tournament.
Ulwelling went on to play on two state champion city basketball teams for Austin after high school and he has run in 42 marathons with numerous first place finishes.
Jenny Blaser
One of the top-three female athletes to come from Pacelli, the 1996 grad started in softball for five years, volleyball for four years, and basketball for four years. Blaser was all-conference in softball and all-conference in volleyball and basketball three years in a row.
She finished with 1,387 career points in basketball and 1,142 career kills in volleyball.
She went on to lead St. Benedict’s University to a second place finish in the nation in basketball her junior year.
There will now be a total of 19 athletes in the Pacelli Athletic Hall of Fame. The candidates are nominated by the general public and the nominees are voted on by current Hall of Fame members.
“We may be the only school who allows our Hall of Famers to vote on the upcoming classes,” Pacelli Development Director Norm Blaser said.
DISTINGUISHED GRADUATES
Richard Lein
The 1928 grad left $250,000 in his will to Pacelli High School in the early 1990s when Pacelli was facing a possible shutdown due to dept.
“If it hadn’t been for him, the school might not be here today,” Blaser said.
Lein was a surgeon who started a medical firm in Roseville, Minn.
Since he is deceased, Lien’s son Rick will accept the plaque for him.
Shirley (Weber) Cahill
The 1951 grad volunteers her time to teach kids songs at the preschool and she speaks at homecoming. She is a Pacelli grad and so are her kids.
“We had more phone calls and e-mails nominating her than maybe anyone before,” Blaser said.
This is last year that distinguished alumni will be announced with the Athletic Hall of Fame. Next year the alumni will be honored in the winter.
