Austin makes its share of bids

Some welcomed good news came out of Tuesday’s county commissioners’ meeting. First, the low bids for the jail and justice center project came in nearly $5 million under projections. Second, it looks like Austin-based firms have the apparent low bids on $8.4 million worth of work.
If the low bids are accepted, it could be a win-win situation. The county gets its jail at a cost lower than estimated, and Austin businesses land much-needed work in a bleak economy.
With all of the projected cuts the county and the city face right now, it’s nice when we can discover a little bit of a bright side.
