Area woman injured at waste station

A rural Austin woman suffered a fall at the waste transfer station Saturday, while unloading debris from her pickup truck.
According to a Mower County Sheriff’s Office report, the woman, of rural Austin, visited the transfer station located outside the Austin city limits near 2 p.m. Saturday,
She told an investigator she dropped the tailgate of her pickup truck after backing the vehicle near the pit area of the transfer station.
Then, she apparently tripped and fell 10-feet into the pit where debris is collected and compacted.
A Waste Management employee was on duty at the time and came to her rescue.
The woman was taken to Austin Medical Center – Mayo Health System by a Gold Cross Ambulance Service crew.
She suffered a cut to the back of her head, requiring staples and bruises to her body.
According to the report, the victim visited the Austin – Mower County Law Enforcement Center later Saturday afternoon to report the incident.
The transfer station is located east of the Austin Municipal Airport.
No criminal charges have been filed, but a Mower County Sheriff’s Office deputy said the incident could be investigated for a possible safety violation.
