The Austin wrestlers had their dual season end in a 61-6 loss at Owatonna in the Section 1AAA quarterfinals Thursday.

The Packers (7-14 overall) got decision wins from Howie Underwood and Ethan Eggum.

“Odd as this may sound, I was pleasantly surprised at how well some of our wrestlers competed,” Austin head coach Bill Kinney said. “Jake Finnegan, Bobbe Dulitz, Colin Sheehan, Dylan Diekmann, and Erick Power all put up strong fights in their matches and competed well.”

Zach Sauer lost a 2-0 decision at 135 pounds.

“ Zach Sauer made just one mistake and gave up a reversal,” Kinney said. “It ended up being the only points scored in the match.”

Underwood won 2-1 against Zach Schreiber after losing to Schreiber earlier this season.

Michael Hirsch lost his first match of the season to a Minnesota wrestler when he fell to Dalton Henderson on an 11-6 decison. Hirsch, who is 31-2 overall and ranked No. 2 at 189 in Class ‘AAA’ beat Henderson, who is ranked No. 2 at 171 pounds, earlier this season.

“Henderson parlayed a five-point counter move in the second period into enough points to hold off Hirsch,” Kinney said. “We learned tonight that once Henderson gets a lead he won’t do much but try to run out the clock.”

The Packers will compete in the individual section tournament next Friday and Saturday at Mayo Civic Center.
