Norbert J. Bergstrom, 84
Norbert John Bergstrom, 84, of Austin, passed away peacefully at his home on Feb. 22, 2009 surrounded by his family.
Norbert was born Sept. 11, 1924 in Miller, S.D. to John and Agnes (Hoban) Bergstrom. The family moved to Austin in 1933. Norbert graduated from Austin High School. He served in the Army during World War II from June 16, 1943 to Oct. 22, 1945, with the 517th Combat Team 460th Parachute Artillery. He was awarded the distinguished Purple Heart. On April 16, 1947 he was united in marriage to Margaret E. Seys at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Austin. Norbert was an avid hunter, fisherman and a renowned welding craftsman. He worked at Hormel Foods for 42 years.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret E. Bergstrom, Austin; children, Monica Grimm, Austin, Ron (Mary Gaye) Bergstrom, Austin, R.J. (DeDee) Bergstrom, Austin, Pam (Mike) Brady, Rochester, Jeff (Jeanne) Bergstrom, Litchfield, Lori Bergstrom, St. Paul, Terri Bergstrom, Austin; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Marg Fingarson, St. Cloud, Mary (Benno) Bissen, Austin.
He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Agnes Bergstrom; sister, Katie Schlottman; great-grandson, Ellis Bergstrom.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009 at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Joe Fogal officiating. There will be a 7 p.m. wake service on Wednesday at Mayer Funeral Home where friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. and also one hour before the service at the church on Thursday. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post #91 and VFW Post #1216.
The honorary casket bearers will be Jack Keenan, Jerry Keenan, Charlie Shriver, Benno Bissen, Kaleb Grimm, Jack Bergstrom. The casket bearers will be Sam Bergstrom, Darin Grimm, Dan Bergstrom, Josh Brady, Jon Bergstrom, Eric Bergstrom, Rainier Conley and Logan Conley.
