The Austin City Council accepted bids on Tuesday night for asbestos abatement and demolition for several jail and justice center acquisition properties as well as flood mitigation sites.

A low bid of $52,600 was accepted from MAVO Systems for asbestos abatement, which will include Steve’s Pizza, the TPTS building and 507 and 509 Oakland Ave. East, next to Budget Oil. Eight bids were received.

The abatement will be funded through jail and justice center funds ($42,000) and flood mitigation funds ($10,000).

Work will begin around March 2, said city engineer Jon Erichson.

A low bid of $144,600 was accepted from Fitzgerald Excavating and Trucking for demolition of Steve’s Pizza, the TPTS Building, Anytime Fitness and 507 and 509 Oakland Ave. East.

Twelve bids were received.

Funding will come from the jail and justice center funds ($123,100) and flood mitigation funds ($21,500).

Demolition could begin as early as March 9, Erichson said.

He explained that an extension request is under review for Steve’s Pizza, which was scheduled for closing March 1.

Anytime Fitness will also be granted a “longer period of time to move out,” Erichson said.
