Nine missed free throws came back to haunt the Hayfield girls basketball team in a 41-36 loss to Rochester Lourdes in Hayfield Friday.

Besides the missed free throws, the Vikings (9-3 overall) allowed Lourdes to get nine offensive boards, as Laura Melquist scored 17 for Lourdes (10-2 overall).

“We had a tough time handling Melquist underneath,” Hayfield head coach Fred Kindschy said. “Plus those free throws hurt us.”

The Vikings had the ball down by three late in the game, but had a turnover.

Hayfield has now lost three of four.
