GRAND MEADOW — The Grand Meadow girls basketball team led from start to finish in a 68-52 win over Rushford/Peterson in GM Monday.
The Superlarks opened the game with back-to-back threes by Jessica Benson and Andrea Swanson and R/P (7-6 overall) never took the lead the rest of the night.
GM (11-3 overall) took a 39-28 lead on a lay-up by Bailey Gomer with 13:39 left in the game and R/P never pulled within double digits from that point on. The Superlarks led by as many as 19 on the night.
A big key to the win was the inside play of GM’s 6-foot-1-inch senior center, Ashley Wilson, who scored a career-high 18 points. Wilson was able to consistently get position inside for her one-step post attack.
“(My inside moves) are coming along,” Wilson said. “I work on it a lot and before games I have someone lob it to me so I can work on spinning.”
Benson added 22 points, six rebounds and five assists for the Superlarks and she said Wilson is getting better each game.
“Ashley’s a huge help and she’s really improving. She does what she needs to do and puts points on the board,” Benson said.
Defensively, the Superlarks had to focus on R/P’s outside attack as Jade Pelzl hit four second half threes and finished with 17 points — giving the 5-5 junior guard over 1,000 points for her career.
“We were very aware of their outside game,” GM head coach Dawn Bauodin said. “Julie’s an outstanding shooter and has a quick shot, so we put Jessica out on her. We knew it would hurt us inside on the boards, but we had to stop the outside shot.”
GM did a lot of things right in a first half that saw it take a 29-21 lead when Abbie Fay converted a put-back at the buzzer. But one thing it struggled on was rebounding as the Trojans outrebounded the Larks 21-12 in the first half. That changed in the second half when GM had a 26-14 advantage on the boards.
GM senior center Andrea Swanson, who finished with 12 points and five assists, pulled down seven of her eight boards in the second half.
“Rebounding hurt us in the first half. It’s got to be effort and not just height,” Bauodin said. “Andrea did a great job in the second half.”
