LETTER: Pork producers care

Published 10:23 am Tuesday, January 13, 2009

Hormel Foods is to be commended for providing safe and healthy pork products and for assuring the pigs they purchase are well cared for at the farm and while being transported to market. They have done this by requiring all hogs they purchase by Dec. 31, 2009, will be raised by pork producers and their employees who are certified in our industry’s  Pork Quality Assurance Plus, have completed well-being assessments on their farms and have Transport Quality Assurance certification. Both programs require education and training.

Pork producers’ belief in ethical principles and their participation in PQA Plus and the TQA program demonstrate a strong commitment to producing safe pork and prioritizing the well-being of our animals and the development of our communities.

What this means to customers of Hormel is that its pork has been raised and transported in a manner that assures the greatest care was given to the pig, the environment and the community of the farm. Pork producers care and so does Hormel.
