Donald J. Brandenburg, 87
Donald John Brandenburg, 87, of Austin, died on Jan. 2, 2009 peacefully at his home. 
Don was born to Henry and Minnie Brandenburg of Luverne, Minn. He grew up on a farm and attended country school and in 1942 he enlisted in the Army. He joined the 82nd Airborne at Fort Benning, Ga. and was discharged at Fort Devon, Mass. There he met and married Rita Rossi on Sept. 15, 1946. The couple moved to Austin where Don worked for the Milwaukee Railroad and later went into the implement business. Don then took over the Standard Station by the Hormel Plant and also the East Side Standard and West Side Standard. After retirement, the couple enjoyed traveling the country and visiting family and friends in McClelland, Texas. They would return to Austin in the spring. Don enjoyed all sports, especially baseball. He went to many games at the old stadium. Don was a member of Queen of Angels Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the VFW.
Survivors include his wife, Rita Brandenburg, Austin; three brothers, Vernon Brandenburg, Spokane, Wash., William (Sharon) Brandenburg, Rochester, Robert Brandenburg, Dixon, Ill.; many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, three sisters-in-law, Sarah Brandenburg, Marge Brandenburg and Arlene Brandenburg.
    A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009 at Queen of Angels Catholic Church with Father Dale Tupper officiating. Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday at Mayer Funeral Home and one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery with military rites. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Queen of Angels Catholic Church.
