The Blooming Prairie Awesome Blossoms boys team continue their winning ways on the road against a good conference team in Wells called United South Central by a score of 59 -43.
The Rebels of USC (3-6 overall, 1-2 Gopher conference) kept pace with the Blossoms (7-1 overall) at times but their shooting 23 percent from the charity stripe didn’t help their cause as the BP boys got to the stripe eleven times and missed only three of those putting their free throw shooting percentage at 73 percent.
Blossoms’ sharp shooter Matt Zellmer had another good night with 21 points followed by Josh Toquam with 17, Austin Moe with 9 and Israel Clark and sophomore Cooper Nelson both contributed 6 points each for the night.
The Blossoms jumped out to a 14-2 lead before the Rebels finally found some points and kept it close enough to hold their opponent to a 10 point lead at half-time.
As the second got underway the Blossoms didn’t come out firing and soon found themselves only up by 3 points with the scoreboard reading 33-30.
Coach John Bruns of the visiting Awesome Blossoms team quickly called the team over and as they re-entered the court it took only a few minutes before the point spread was soon up over 10 again and from there on out the Blossoms kept their conference opponents in check and finished the night with another convincing win as coach Bruns was able to play the remainder of the bence for the last seconds of the game.
“We got off to a really nice start,” Bruns said. “But the boys lost their focus in the middle part of the game. They were able to reset thought and get to the hoop better and then our defense really stepped up from there.”
The Blossoms play next at home against another conference foe as they will be playing Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton on Tuesday.
