Connor Gunderson scored 17, Marcus Gunderson had 15 and T.J Fritz tallied all of his nine points in the second half as the Austin boys basketball team outlasted Mayo in Rochester Saturday 57-48.
The game was a make-up contest from Friday night, which was canceled.
“It was a pretty close game throughout, really we pulled away in the last five minutes,” said Kris Fadness, Austin head coach.
Steven Rizzi and Will Felten each scored eight points, while Nate Justice and Chris Jahr each had four. The turning point was in the final five minutes of the second half when Fritz drove to the basket, scored and was fouled, resulting in a three-point play that put the Packers up 45-40 with 4:40 left to play.
“Once we got that, we were able to make some free throws down the stretch and spread the floor a little bit,” Fadness said.
“That was the turning point.”
Neither team shot well, but turnovers were a different story. Austin turned the ball over 14 times compared with Mayo’s 23.
“The turnovers were the difference,” Fadness said. “Our kids made a nice run to pull it out in the end.”
With the victory, the Packers improve to 5-1 in league, 8-2 overall.
