The wait is over.

The Austin Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department has found its new director.

In a majority vote Monday at City Hall, board members selected interim-director Kim Underwood to take over the post vacated by long-time director Denny Maschka, who died in June.

Underwood, who lives in Austin, has served as interim director since July and has worked in the Austin parks and rec office for 26 years.

“It feels great,” said Darlene Thaisen, board chair, of the decision. “She’s done a great job. She deserves the opportunity, and Denny was mentoring her.”

The board wrapped up interviews with six candidates last week.

The city council will formally vote on the board’s decision at its Jan. 5 meeting.

“I’m excited,” Underwood said. “I would like to thank the park board and the staff, the city council and the citizens of Austin for all of their support these past six months.”
