Three residents in southwest Austin have discovered swastikas in their mailboxes, what Austin Police Chief Paul Philipp calls “a hate crime.”

According to the chief, two residents in the 1400 block of 24th Avenue Southwest and one in the 2200 block of 14th Street Southwest found the Nazi Party emblems drawn on pieces of paper between 4 and 5 p.m. Thursday. All victims live in approximately the same neighborhood.

“I don’t know why they are selecting these people,” Philipp said.

One victim reported to police her note also had profanity and racial slurs written on it.

Philipp said this is the first report of swastikas he has seen in a long time.

Police have no suspects.
