Paul L. Sathre, 87
Paul L. Sathre, 87, of Austin, passed away on Dec. 30, 2008 at the Austin Medical Center with his wife and family at his side, due to complications of Parkinson’s Disease.
Paul was born in Austin on Aug. 29, 1921 to Johnny and Bertha (Benson) Sathre, and he resided in Austin his entire life. On May 17, 1947, Paul married his best friend and the love of his life, Alice Crilly. Paul was employed by the Hormel Company for 44 years until his retirement in 1984. Paul continued to enjoy raising trees and flowers, woodworking, traveling, playing bridge, reading and he especially took pleasure in providing his grandchildren love, endless fun activities and bear hugs. Paul enjoyed a challenge, particularly a crossword puzzle or math problem. He was a member of Queen of Angels Catholic Church where he was active as a lector, choir member, usher, communion minister and board member. Paul participated in many aspects of Pacelli High School while his children were students. He was a veteran of World War II, member of the Legion and was the bingo manager at the VFW in Austin and delivered Meals on Wheels. Paul leaves a legacy of love and laughter and is a lasting role model for his family as a teacher of life’s lessons.
Survivors include his loving wife and caregiver, Alice Sathre, Austin; six children, Michael (Lorelee) Sathre, Inver Grove Heights, Paulette (Don) Schlichter, Apple Valley, Danny (Janeen) Sathre, Jacksonville, Ore., Charlotte (Dan) Knutson, Bloomington, Scott (Jana) Sathre, Allendale, Mich., Christine (Kevin) Schwab, St. Louis, Mo.; 11 grandchildren, Joshua Sathre, Treana (Andrew) Mungovan, Corey Schlichter, Dane Sathre, Yvonne (Beau) Garrett, Katie Knutson, Tracey Schlichter, Kanette Sathre, Elizabeth (Jake) Snellink, Emily Schwab, Kyle Knutson; one great-grandson, Kieran Mungovan; siblings, Harvey (Alice) Sathre, Adams, Helen (Byron) Huseby, Adams, Dorothy (Sparky) Bellrichard, Austin, Joanne Sathre (Mrs. Maynard), Austin, Donna (TJ) Williams, Albuquerque, N.M., Joan (Tom) Adams, Boulder City, Nev., Ann (Gary) Eppen, Goodyear, Ariz.; several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his daughter, Priscilla; grandsons, Christopher Sathre and Matthew Knutson; brothers and sister-in-law, Maynard and William (Morna).
A funeral mass will be celebrated 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009 at Queen of Angels Catholic Church with Father Dale Tupper officiating. There will be at 7 p.m. rosary on Friday at Mayer Funeral Home where friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. and also from 11:30 to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.  Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. “Grandpa Paul” bearers will be his 11 grandchildren. The family prefers memorials to Queen of Angels Catholic Church and Parkinson’s Desease research through the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research at Church Street Station, P.O.
