Mary A. Deegan, 96
Mary A. Deegan, 96, of Winnebago, Minn., died on Monday, Nov. 10, 2008, at Parker-Oaks in Winnebago. 
She was born on Oct. 27, 1912, in Dwight, Ill., the daughter of James Leo and Margaret Louise(Burns)Deegan.
As a child, Mary moved to the Winnebago area. She graduated from Fairmont High School in 1930 and in 1931 from the Fairmont Teacher Training Dept. She began a teaching career in rural schools in Blue Earth and Martin counties. After receiving her Bachelors degree from Mankato State in 1953, she taught at Redwood Falls and then as a kindergarten teacher in Austin for 24 years. Mary spent her summers in Winnebago living with her close friends, Martha and John Arndt. She retired in 1976 from teaching and moved to Winnebago. Active in her retirement, she spent her boundless energies reading, supporting the Muir Library, Winnebago Museum, St. Mary’s Catholic Church and playing bridge.
She is survived by her four nephews, two nieces, many grand-nephews and nieces.  
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, James; sister, Louise; nephews, James Deegan and Jerome Deegan; and niece, Jackie George.  Memorials are preferred to the American Diabetes Assn. or the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, Dec. 5, 2008, at 11 a.m., at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Winnebago, with the Reverend Mark McNea, Rev. Ed Mountain and Rev. John Traufler officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, St. James. Visitation time will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, at Spencer-Owen Funeral Home in Winnebago with a Rosary to be recited at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.
