After a few weeks of coming close, the Riverland men’s basketball team finally hit the century mark in a 100-53 win over Western Wisconsin Tech in Riverland Gym Wednesday.

The Blue Devils (5-8 overall) didn’t mess around as they hit eight threes in the first 10 minutes of the game and shot 50 percent from the arc on the night.

Jason Simmons, who finished with 11 points, eight rebounds, and three assists, hit two threes in the first three minutes to jump-start his team.

“Right out of the gates they were leaving us open and we’re a three point shooting team,” he said.

Even after that rush, RCC’s lead wasn’t unbreakable at 34-20. But then Riverland started to go inside.

With the lane wide open, Spencer Monson of Bricelyn, Minn. and Chris Moragne of Lonoke, Ark. led the way as RCC went on an 18-2 run in the last six minutes of the first half. Monson scored six during the run, and Moragne, who finished with 12 points and seven assists, chipped in seven during the streak.

“We’ve shot well before, but what really helped us was the confidence of being the bigger team,” RCC head coach Dan Swift said. “Spencer Monson was strong inside for us.”

The second half was a wash, as RCC emptied their bench and every player who got in the game scored at least six. The only drama came when Cody Andrews hit a three with 20 seconds left to give the Blue Devils 100 points for the first time this season.

WWT played the game with just six players.

“You have to give them credit, they’ve lost four good guys since the last time we played them. It was a great opportunity for us to get everyone some minutes,” Swift said.

Simmons was also selected MCAC Southern Division player of the week. He averaged 24 points, 16 rebounds, and five assists last week. It is the second time in three weeks that Simmons has received that honor.

RCC will now head to it’s winter break. The team opens up MCAC play Jan. 7 against Ridgewater with an 8 p.m. contest.
