The undefeated Awesome Blossoms (4-0) took it to the Glenville-Emmons squad 81-39 on Blooming Prairies’ home court in a boys basketball game Tuesday.

Israel Clark, a senior guard for BP, hit from the outside, inside and even from his hind side as he tossed up a shot after falling to the ground under the Blossoms’ hoop in the second half.

Clark put up 20 points on the night but was still outdone by his friend and teammate Matt Zellmer, the Blossoms’ senior forward who has been averaging better than 26 points per game in the first three games, put up 31 points on the night and said after the game that he got off to a slow start in tonight’s lambasting of the Wolverines (0-4 overall).

“I missed my first three shots of the night,” Zellmer said. “But I eventually started feeling it.”

The game started with the Blossoms running and pressing the ball fast and hard to the hoop.

Senior forward Josh Toquam tipped the ball into the back court to junior guard Justin Ingvalson who was starting at the point position.

Ingvalson instinctively got the ball across the mid-court line and made a sharp throw to Clark who started the game off  with a deep three point shot finding all net. Moments later, Toquam took Clark’s bullet pass underneath for a sure layup and with less than 30 seconds off the clock the Blossoms found themselves with a 5-0 lead.

Clark hit a short jumper and then after a Blossoms’ steal, Clark went strong to the hoop but was fouled and he made the Wolverines pay by making both free-throw shots.

There was nearly four minutes off the clock before the scoreboard showed the visiting team with two points for their efforts.

With another four more minutes off the clock, the Blossoms’ shooters, Ingvalson, Toquam, Clark and finally with the game clock at 12:00, Zellmer joined the fray of shooters and gave his input for the first of his 31 points on the night. Zellmer hit seven of the next 11 of the Blossoms’ buckets with two of them being from behind the three point line.

Before the half came to an end, another shooter joined in with his first points of his varsity career. Rudy Vasquez, a five foot nothin’ a hundred and nothin’ junior guard who plays every game with passion and determination for the black and white of BP. Vasquez rarely gets a shot at the hoop but last night was his night in the spot light.

“My defense so far is usually what is my biggest contribution to the team is,” Vasquez said. “It really felt good to score.”

Vasquez used his defense to allow him to score the first of his eight points on the night. Vasquez had three steals on the night of which the first one he took solo to the hoop and scored the first points of his varsity career.

“It really hasn’t sunk in yet,” Vasquez said. “I just want to thank everyone in the crowd for supporting me.”

The first half ended with the Awesome Blossoms in full control of the game with 52 – 22 lead.

The second half was just more of the same with Clark hitting shots from all over the court, Zellmer making the most of every minute that he gets when this kind of a game happens.

Coach John Bruns substituted every player in both halves giving everyone a chance to gain game speed experience as well.

Bruns and his Blossom squad are looking forward to some tough competition in the days to come as they will be facing state ranked Triton on the Cobras’ home court.

“We have been looking forward to playing Triton,” Bruns said. “This will be a big section game coming up on Friday in Dodge Center.”
