Alice I. Schmidt, 90
Alice Ida Schmidt, 90, of Austin, died on Dec. 3, 2008 at Austin Medical Center after suffering a stroke on Nov. 26, 2008.
She was born Feb. 19, 1918 to Reinhold and Martha (Mienke) Laabs in Fenton, Iowa where she grew up. A Fenton High School Valedictorian in the graduating class of 1935, Alice married Walter Schmidt on Sept. 29, 1935 in Mallard, Iowa. They moved to Minnesota, making their home in Austin in 1942. Walter passed away in 1971. Alice moved to St. Mark’s Apartments in 2005. A member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, she liked to garden, watch songbirds, and she loved to work crossword puzzles.
Survivors include four sons, Delmar (Barbara Griffin) Schmidt, Altus, Okla., Ray (Gail) Schmidt, LeRoy Schmidt, Roger (Sharyl Van’tHul) Schmidt, all of Austin; 12 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; sister, Irene Wolf, Bancroft, Iowa; special friends, Irene and Mel Eichstadt, Austin.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Walter; one grandson; one granddaughter; three sisters and two brothers.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Theodore Barthels officiating. Visitation is one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at Grandview Cemetery in Austin. Memorials are preferred to St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Austin. Worlein Funeral Home of Austin is in charge of arrangements.
