Jay A. Blom, 59
Jay Arthur Blom, 59, of Austin, died on Nov. 24, 2008 at his home surrounded by his family.
Jay was born Dec. 23, 1948 in Austin to Gus and Mary Blom of rural Rose Creek. He grew up on the family farm and graduated from Elkton High School. Jay had one year of college. On Aug. 24, 1968 he was united in marriage to Vikki Swanson at Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Austin.
Jay was drafted into the United States Army on Jan. 14, 1969. He was in Vietnam for 16 months. Jay worked at Austin Utilities for 35 years, first as a light equipment operator and in the Generation Department, and the last years as supervisor of power and water. Jay was a member of the American Legion and Pheasant Habitat Club for many years. He enjoyed the outdoors and loved to hunt and fish and go camping with family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Vikki Blom, Austin; son, Jason (Tara) Blom, Austin; daughter, Melissa (Wayne) Boullion, Austin; three grandchildren, Jacob, McKinzey, Jessa; three step-grandchildren, Brandon, Kelsey, Megan; five brothers, John (Delia) Blom, Laughlin, Nev., Jerry (Jane) Blom, Casper, Wyo., Joel (Linda) Blom, Austin, Joy Blom, Austin, Jules (Shari) Blom, Jordan; three sisters, Judy (James) Kuempel, Blaine, Janice (Bob) VanLuevan, Custer, S.D., Jolene Nelson (Vern), Austin.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Gus and Mary; stepmother, Alpha; granddaughter, Brittany.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008 at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Joe Fogal officiating. There will be a 6:30 p.m. wake service on Friday at Mayer Funeral Home where friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. and also a half-hour before the service at the church on Saturday. Interment will be in Hoflanda Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post No. 91.
