Hakes, Srp win races

Austin High School alumna Sue Hakes, whom the Herald featured in an Oct. 30 story about former residents holding public office, was elected mayor of Grand Marais, Minn.

Hakes, a 1976 graduate of AHS, unseated incumbent Evelyn Larsen with 53.01 percent of votes. In the northern Minnesota town on Lake Superior, 798 voters cast ballots in the election, with 423 for Hakes, according to the Secretary of State Web site.

This is her first term in an elected office.

Roy Srp, mayor of Waseca, Minn. and 1971 AHS graduate, was elected to a third term.

He ran unopposed, and garnered 96.45 percent of votes.
