LYLE — Lyle/Pacelli couldn’t handle Glenville/Emmons’ serving in a season-ending loss in the first round of the Section 1A volleyball tournament in Lyle Monday.
The ninth-seeded Wolverines (8-20 overall) served 22 aces on the night en route to a 25-18, 25-22, 21-25, 25-23 win. G/E served seven early aces in the deciding fourth game to take a 9-1 lead.
“We don’t move our feet and we didn’t play the close balls,” L/P head coach Carl Ellis said. “We have very good line judges here and if the ball is in they’ll call it in. We’ve got to play the close ones.”
The eighth-seeded Athletics (7-22 overall) rallied back in the fourth game to take a 22-20 lead after Emily Leif served seven straight points and Brianna Cook made a key block kill. G/E/ tied it up at 22, but Haley Meyer, who had six kills on the night, spiked down a point to put L/P up 23-22.
The Wolverines scored the last three points as Kailey Davis made a kill and Danielle Cooper served an ace.
L/P also led late in the second game 22-20 after an ace by Leif, but G/E scored the next five as Jessie Nelson made a kill and Cooper made a block kill to help put it away.
“They didn’t want to lose. It’s always tough to play your last game as a senior,” Ellis said. “There were spots on the floor where we could score every time. But for some reason it wasn’t hit where we needed it to go.”
The Athletics looked good when they controlled the ball, but more often than not they struggled with getting into their offense.
“Our passing was not real good. We couldn’t control their serves,” Ellis said.
The Wolverines scored the first point of every match and L/P trailed 9-3 early in the first game.
“We always start out slow and when we start our comeback then it’s too late,” said Breanna Bartholomew, who had seven kills, six aces, and one block for L/P.
Brianna Cook had 13 kills and three blocks for L/P, and Alexis Balgeman had six assists, four aces, and two kills.
G/E will play at No. 1-seeded Bethlehem Academy Thursday at 6 p.m.
