The Grand Meadow football team survived a late scare to beat Spring Grove 64-55 in the first round of the nine-man Section 1 football playoffs Monday in GM.

The No. 4 seeded Superlarks (6-3 overall) allowed 30 points to Spring Grove (3-6 overall) in the fourth quarter but GM held on.

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” GM head coach Gary Sloan said. “They just went crazy in the fourth quarter.”

Spring Grove used the big play to attack the Superlarks as five of its eight scores came on plays of over 60 yards.

GM was up 34-6 late in the first half, but Spring Grove scored two TDs right before halftime.

“I felt pretty good about our situation until they scored twice,” Sloan said.

Michael Gehling and Killian Smith each had TD catches for GM.

The Superlarks will play at No. 1 Houston (9-0 overall) Saturday at 7 p.m.
