The Southland football team just missed winning in a 17-14 double overtime loss to Caledonia in Adams Friday.

The Rebels (4-3 overall) had a chance to win the game in regulation, but Dan Schneider came up short on a 30-yard field goal with 14 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

After both teams scored on their first OT possessions, the Rebels fumbled in the second overtime, and Caledonia ended the game with a 25-yard field goal.

“It was one of the best games I’ve been involved in and our kids played phenomenal,” Southland head coach Shawn Kennedy said. “Last year Caledonia missed a late field goal to beat us, so I guess it makes sense that we miss one to lose to them this year.”

Southland led 7-0 early after Alan May caught a 35-yard pass from halfback Sam Notterman to set up a one-yard TD run by Ben Wolterman. May laid out to catch the pass.

“You always ask your kids to give it all and he did it on that play,” Kennedy said.

Caledonia (6-1 overall) tied the game up in the fourth quarter at 7 apiece.

In the first overtime, the Rebels scored first when Alan May caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Mitch Nagele — who threw for 65 yards.

Caledonia scored on a third-down play to force the second overtime.

Caledonia’s 17 points was a season-low.

“Our defense played awesome,” Kennedy said. “There was a lot of popping out there and this is how we have to play in the playoffs.”

The Rebels were held to just five yards on the ground in the loss.

“That’s the best defense we’ve faced by far,” Kennedy said. “Their d-line was quick and we couldn’t do much against them besides bubble screens.”

Southland will play at Kingsland Wednesday at 7 p.m.
