PETA to hold news conference in Austin today

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) will host a news conference today at 11 a.m. at the AmericInn, Meeting Room 100, in Austin.

A month has gone by since PETA announced its investigation alleging abuse of sows and piglets on an Iowa pig farm that supplies piglets who are raised for Hormel Foods products. PETA will present unreleased video footage of a farm manager who reportedly was caught abusing sows at the facility.

PETA has repeatedly called on Hormel to demand that basic animal welfare reforms be enacted at all of its suppliers’ facilities, including calling for the termination and prosecution of any employee who is found to abuse animals, a ban on shocking devices, and the installation of surveillance cameras to allow management to see what is going on in the barns. PETA claims Hormel has not responded to PETA’s requests to meet or discuss the issues and seems not to have implemented any changes that could prevent the abuses that PETA’s investigators recorded.
