Packers hang on against Wingers: VIDEO

The Austin boys soccer team didn’t capitalize on every opportunity, but they scored just enough to advance in a 1-0 win over Red Wing in the first round of the Section 1A playoffs in Art Hass Stadium Tuesday.
The third-seeded Packers (10-6-2 overall) will host No. 6 Faribault (7-5-3 overall) Thursday at 7 p.m.
Austin’s lone goal came halfway through the second half when Martin Manocchio took a pass from Niclas Ryberg and maneuvered past two Winger defenders to the right before firing a kick into the left side of the net.
“It was a pretty good pass and I kind of moved around a couple of defenders and it put it in,” Manocchio said. “We’ve been working on it in practice and it paid off.”
Although the Wingers (2-15 overall) attempted just two shots on the night, they put some pressure on the Packers in the last minute. With 35 seconds left in the game Red Wing’s, Colin Quinn booted a shot from deep that was saved by a diving Ryan Rasell.
“It was a good shot,” Rasell said. “I could’ve gotten my hands on it, but I had to play it safe and just punch it out.”
Austin nearly tied the match themselves with 17 minutes left in the contest. The Packers were trying to clear out the ball with no Wingers nearby when suddenly Rasell had to make a save off the foot of one of his teammates.
“There was miscommunication,” said Rasell. “I called for the ball and Josh (Needham) didn’t hear it in time and kicked it right into (Jacob Larson’s) face and it almost rolled into the goal. My heart was racing after that one.”
Austin attempted 32 shots on the night to score just one goal. Peter Lindahl had a shot bounce off the left post in the first half and Drew Halvin also hit one of the side post 10 minutes into the second half.
“We created opportunities. As they underdog, they’re gonna be a little more physical and we had to know to keep moving the ball and not get frustrated,” Austin head coach Jens Levisen said. “I’m sure 75 to 80 percent of the game was played on their end. But they had a couple of balls go through and you can’t allow those openings. Against a better team, they’ll take advantage of those chances.”
Manocchio said the wet field made it tough to run the offense.
“The weather effected us a lot,” he said. “We had a some good crosses, but we had a tough time getting it in there. We knew we’d score (eventually).”
The Packers may have lost one of their captains for the rest of the playoffs when Halvin had his legs taken out while running at full speed with 19:06 left in the match. After about a five minute delay, the senior midfielder was carried off the field.
Levisen said he had to refocus his team after the injury.
“My first concern was that one of their guys spoke up and Henry (Darling) jumped into the situation,” he said. “I had (assistant coach) Jake (Levisen) jump right in there and cool him off. I didn’t want any retaliation of any kind. After that I told them to keep it going.”
The Packers tied Faribault 3-3 in the regular season on the road. Levisen said home field advantage will be a big boost for Austin.
“Up there we were just kind of going through the motions,” he said. “When we scored a goal nobody got excited, when they scored no body really reacted. It was also a shorter field. I think guys are pretty hungry because we didn’t show Faribault our best game.”
