Is snow in the forecast?

The rumors are true — there is a possibility for some of the “s” word on Monday in the Austin area.
According to KAAL-TV meteorologist Chris Kuball, snow is predicted for overnight Monday, with temperatures in the middle-20s.
“There is a chance,” Kuball said Thursday. Worried trick-or-treaters, however, can rest at ease; there is only a chance for flurries, and Kuball does not expect any accumulation.
Saturday is predicted to be warmer than usual, but temperatures for next week are forecast for normal or a little below average.
Other speculation buzzing around about upcoming months, on the other hand, is not true.
Mark Seeley, University of Minnesota Extension climatologist, said now through the beginning of next year is not expected to be colder than usual, but above average.
“Nearly all of it suggests warmer than usual temperatures for us through January,” Seeley said. “It appears that the cold temperatures that are in association with this occurrence here Sunday through Monday are just short-term.”
Precipitation could be above or below average this winter, he said.
“I haven’t seen any organization or weather office showing we are going to be stronger one direction or other,” he said.
Seeley explained that any snow falling now can not accumulate because it is still too early.
“The soil temperatures are still in the 40s or 50s, so the ground is still to warm for it to last really long,” he said.
Seeley pointed out that drivers may want to be cautious Sunday and Monday because roads may be slippery.
