A 7-year-old Austin boy is in “very critical” condition at St. Mary’s Hospital, Rochester, following a car-pedestrian accident Saturday.
According to an Austin Police Department report, the child was struck by a passing motorist when he darted into traffic chasing a younger brother.
The mishap occurred 3:15 p.m. Saturday near the intersection of First Avenue and Eighth Street Northeast and Queen of Angels Catholic Church and School.
Two brothers, Maurice Allen Iten, 7, and his brother, (unidentified), 6, were playing tag.
The younger brother said he stopped and looked both ways before crossing the street. However, his older brother apparently did not. When he ran into the street, he tripped and fell into the path of the oncoming vehicle, traveling an estimated 30 miles per hour.
The driver was unable to stop and struck the child, who suffered head, shoulder and leg injuries, according to the report.
He was rushed to Austin Medical Center – Mayo Health System by a Gold Cross Ambulance Service crew and then transferred by Mayo One to the Rochester hospital.
The latest report issued by authorities listed him in very critical condition.
