Sportts owners to serve up something new

A husband-wife duo is putting a new twist on an Austin classic with the purchase of Hovland’s Sportts Restaurant.

Ken and Mary Shuck of Owatonna will take the helm Sept. 15 from Bruce Hovland, with the intention of expanding the business but staying true to what makes the restaurant a second-home for some customers.

“We want to bring it back to life,” Ken said. “We’re going to try and expand some things.”

The Shucks, both Austin natives, are returning to their roots here after learning of the business opportunity, which they have renamed AWW-Shucks Sportts Bar and Grill.

Ken has experience managing restaurants and The Dog Pound Bar in Owatonna; Mary will help out at Sportts and continue working at Josten’s. The couple has bought a residence in Austin.

With Sportts known for its breakfast, Sunday buffets, steak, and what Ken calls “the best ribs in town,” the Shucks want to continue offering those, but extending the night life at the restaurant.

“At night, at around 7 p.m., I’d like to switch gears,” Ken said.

“We’re not totally eliminating what people like,” Mary assured regulars. “It’s the evening part we’re trying to improve.”

The couple plans to promote its pool tables, dart boards and 11 TVs to sports enthusiasts and a younger crowd, and also lengthening hours to 5 a.m. to 1 a.m. They also want to bring back tap beer.

Sportts will still offer catering with delivery and dining room rentals. The Shucks won’t change staff either; Lori Anderson will continue as manager; their nephew, Jacob Cooklin, will serve as the night kitchen manager, and their son, Curtis, will be an “all-around helper,” Mary said.

Ken said they will likely celebrate their new business with a hog roast at a grand opening next year.

AWW-Shucks Sportts Bar and Grill is located at 3301 West Oakland Ave. For more information, call 433-9216.
