Mayo’s early attacks too much for Austin boys soccer team

The Packer soccer team couldn’t convert its opportunities in a 3-0 loss to Mayo at Art Hass Stadium Tuesday.
Austin (8-5-2 overall, 2-5-2 Big Nine) had a penalty kick attempt by Jacob Bentley blocked in the second half and the Packers saw all 10 of their shots denied on the night.
“We created some opportunities and moved the ball pretty well, but they kept things moving as well,” Austin head coach Jens Levisen said.
The Spartans took an early lead when Abdirizaq Sabrie started the scoring with a kick across the grain to make it 1-0 in the 14th minute, and Mayo scored again when Sami Ouda knocked in a crossing pass from Derek Schmidt halfway through the first half.
“The first one was from a little further out, but that second one, there was somebody running right there and all he had to do is hit it,” Levisen said.
Things took a rough turn in the second half as things got a little physical. Austin’s Jacob Brehmer was called for a red-card foul while trying prevent a breakaway goal on Ouda. Mayo’s Matthew Zietlow knocked in the penalty kick with eight minutes left in the match.
“You get a PK on a guy who hasn’t been called for two fouls all season and then he gets a red card and he’s out of the game and everybody on the team just sinks,” Levisen said.
Ryan Rasell had four saves in the loss for Austin.
Austin will travel to Mankato East Thursday and host John Marshall Saturday. The Packers will open Section 1A play next Tuesday.
