One evacuee from the Gulf Coast struck by Hurricane Gustav is in Austin.
According to Aaron Stewart, emergency services coordinator for the Mower County chapter of the American Red Cross, the evacuee arrived over the Labor Day holiday weekend.
“He is here in Austin staying with relatives and friends,” Stewart said. “He contacted the local chapter to see what services might be available if he needs them.”
The man is from Baton Rouge, La.
Hurricane Gustav blew ashore from the Gulf of Mexico early Monday.
It was not the same force as Hurricane Katrina three years ago.
Government officials ordered the evacuation of potential hurricane victims over the weekend prior to the hurricane reaching landfall.
As many as 1.9 million people were evacuated from harm’s way.
While evacuees from the Gulf Coast were heading north to safety, Mower County volunteers were heading south to give aid.
“We have volunteers on-site in the hurricane region performing specific tasks at shelters and other areas,” Stewart said.
At the same time, Stewart said the Red Cross is recruiting more volunteers who can deliver skills needed as more evacuees return to their homes and victims of the hurricane’s wrath come forward.
Stewart said other organizations, such as the Salvation Army, are collecting items the evacuees and victims will need.
Meanwhile, the Mower County Red Cross chapter will accept cash donations to help defray expenses during the emergency.
The chapter’s emergency services coordinator, said the Red Cross volunteers are being used to perform disaster assessments, survey health needs and verify financial difficulties when they reach shelters.
On Tuesday, government officials in Gulf Coast cities had not yet given the all-clear for evacuees to return to their homes.
