Austin can’t stop Falcons

Some offensive difficulties and a couple of defensive breakdowns cost the Packer girls soccer team in a 2-0 loss to Faribault at Art Hass Stadium Thursday.
Austin (0-4-1 overall, 0-4-1 Big Nine) allowed two deep goals to Faribault sophomore Sam McBain in the match. Nine minutes into the first half, McBaine fired one from 28 yards out across the field and found the back corner of the net. Eight minutes into the second half, she hit an almost identical shot from 30 yards out.
“Neither one of the goals that were scored were the goal keeper’s fault,” Austin head coach Mark Raymond said. “We’ve got to get more pressure from the midfield. The problem is, in order to put a ball in from that high from that far away, it takes three seconds to tee it up and take a run at it and that’s not acceptable.”
Laine Hicks produced three breakaway opportunities in the first half for the Packers, but she missed all three attempts by shooting wide. In the second half, Hicks shot wide again on a breakaway.
Besides those attempts, the Packers didn’t produce too many quality shots — although they attempted 17 on the night.
“We didn’t play our game. We got out of our system,” Raymond said. “They decided to play something other than what we played in practice and we paid the price. Instead of playing 11 on a team, they played as 11 individuals. The girls ran hard and did some things, but they didn’t play within the system. I’m not sure what happened.”
Freshman goal keeper Maing Garcia had 13 saves for Austin.
