The Augsburg Centennial Singers, a 55-voice male chorus, will appear in concert at St. Olaf Lutheran Church on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. A free-will offering will be received. St. Olaf sponsors the concert.
The Centennial Singers consist of men from various walks of life drawn together by their love of singing. The group was formed in 1993 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first gospel quartet from Augsburg College to sing in Norway. The Singers have presented concerts in Norway twice, Florida and most recently presented a series of 10 concerts in the Southwestern United States. Their director, Al Reesnes, received a BA degree from Augsburg and his MMusED. Degree from MacPhail College of Music. He has done further studies with Fred Waring, Robert Shaw and Roger Wagner. He directed high schools in Minnesota for 33 years, developing organizations noted for high quality performance and literature.
The music for the 2008-09 concert season includes spirituals, familiar hymns and gospel songs, selections from the classical repertoire and a barbershop tune or two. The season includes appearances in the metropolitan area, out state Minnesota and a 12-day tour in Arizona.
