Two teens have been charged with theft of a motor vehicle after they allegedly took a Toyota Camry from an Austin address to Pine Island, Minn., where they were caught by authorities ransacking cars.

Jared Scott Smith, 17, and Zachary Blake Thieling, 16, were reported runaways from Austin-based Gerard Academy Aug. 2, the same day of their arrest. They have been charged with single felony counts of theft of a motor vehicle.

According to the criminal complaint, the duo took the Camry from a Ninth Street Southwest address; its owner reported the car missing that day.

Goodhue County authorities were later notified of suspicious activity behind the Pine Island fire hall involving two young men wearing white tee shirts.

A officer responded to find the pair allegedly rummaging through a red truck. Smith and Thieling walked onto the sidewalk and, eventually, gave chase when asked to stop by police, the complaint stated.

The officer caught Smith, who said that he’d just escaped from a facility in Austin and suspected he had warrants, according to the complaint. Thieling was taken into custody blocks away around 1:15 a.m.

The complaint said Smith told police that the two were nearly out of gas, so began looking through vehicles for an alternative to drive.

Neither defendant has appeared in court. No hearings have been scheduled.

Because of a Twin Cities conference, Gerard Academy representatives were not available for comment.
