There’s a “buzz” going on in the St. Mark’s Lutheran Home crafts room.

According to activities director Margaret Mueske, the residents enjoyed their best year every at the 2008 Mower County Fair.

“Twenty St. Mark’s Lutheran Home residents submitted projects for judging. They earned four champion or reserve champion ribbons, 30 blues and 15 red ribbons,” Mueske said.

Many residents submitted more than one project.

Topping the list of remarkable achievements is the amazing Anna List.

At age 101, she brought home a red ribbon for her embroidery work.

Art Scherer scored champion ribbons for his acrylic paintings.

According to Scherer, “I paint from memory. Whatever is in my head.”

The activities director said the ribbon-winning performances could not have been achieved without the help of a valuable corps of volunteers.

“Each Wednesday, they come here and help our residents with their projects,” Mueske said.

On Aug. 13, the crafts room regulars celebrated their Mower County Fair accomplishments with a party.

“The crafts room is very popular among the residents,” Mueske said. “As many as 20 will come and work on crafts. Usually we have 10 to 12 each day.”

The crafters are responsible for the centerpieces at the tables in the dining room. They created the hearts in February, red, white and blue flags in July and are finishing up pumpkins for October and turkeys for November.

“All of our crafters do a great job. They’re very talented,” Mueske said.
