The director of special services for Austin Public Schools has turned in her resignation.

Melissa Schaller, who has been with the district for four years, submitted her notification Aug. 4. The resignation was announced at the Austin School Board meeting Monday night.

Schaller has accepted a director of special services position at Intermediate School District No. 917, an eight-member district in the Twin Cities.

Currently, Schaller serves as head of special education services for all the district buildings.

She said Monday the move is a great opportunity for her in a larger school system.

“The actual duties will be a bit different,” she said. “It’s a big step up.”

Schaller’s last day with the district will be Aug. 29.
