Rock musical to debut at RCC

Riverland Community Theatre will be performing “Chess,” a rock musical of romantic rivalries and political intrigue, Aug. 20-23 in Austin.
The collaborators on “Chess” are no strangers to rock music or rock musicals. The music is by Benny Anderson and Bjorn Ulvaeus (formerly of Abba) with lyrics by Tim Rice (famous for “Jesus Christ Super Star”).
Based on an “East Meets West” love triangle, the players, lovers, politicians and spies make their moves to the beat of a rock score that includes “One Night in Bangkok,” “Heaven Help My Heart” and Someone Else’s Story.” The American chess star, the Russian champion and a Hungarian American female assistant who arrives with the American and leaves with the Russian make up a romantic triangle filled with passion and intrigue.
Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 20-23 at the Frank W. Bridges Theatre at Riverland Community College in the East Building of the Austin Campus. Tickets are $15 and may be purchased at the Coffee House on Main and the Riverland Box Office.
