The Packers soccer team continued their offensive efficiency in a 3-1 win over Caledonia at Art Hass Stadium Saturday.
Austin got things going early when German foreign exchange student Moritz Doering slid in and chipped in a missed shot by Will Darling from the wing just under seven minutes into the first half. Austin added another score when Jacob Brehmer found a hole in the right side of the net from about 15 yards out.
“I like shooting from the middle, because then I can use my right foot,” Brehmer said. “I like being able to bend it around the right post and it’s a good angle.”
After Caledonia scored halfway through the second half to make it 2-1, three minutes later Peter Lindahl added an insurance goal on a putback into the right side of the goal. The Packers (2-0 overall) had good spacing and showed some good passing in the win over Caledonia (0-1 overall).
“We got a lot of guys that have been working on different things,” Austin head coach Jens Levisen said. “We’ve been working on a lot of shooting and playing as a team. Those quick shots are something we’ve been working on.”
Brehmer missed a chance at a second goal early in the first half when he missed one of the post.
“It was closer and more open (than the one I scored on),” Brehmer said. “I tried to do the same thing but I got a little unlucky that time.”
Austin had another close scoring chance denied near the end of the second half when Martin Manocchio had a one-on-one with the goalie from the left wing but was denied.
Caledonia had a goal called back due to a penalty with just over two minutes into the game, when Collin Gluch knocked one in on a breakaway.
“It was a good call,” Levisen said. “The guy who got the goal had clipped the defender.”
At goal, Austin’s Ryan Rasell had six saves but he broke up several passes, which thwarted Caledonia’s offense.
“He was getting after at it,” Levisen said. “I think he’s getting there and his confidence will build each game.”
