The Austin boys soccer team came out scoring in a 5-1 win over Kasson/Mantorville in it’s season opener at Art Hass Stadium Thursday night.
The corner was kind to the Packers early as they scored twice in the first six minutes on a corner kick goal by Jacob Brehmer that was assisted by Henry Darling and a corner kick by Henry Darling that sliced in for a score.
“That’s not something you aim for on a corner kick, but it happens once in awhile and it was pretty exciting,” Austin head coach Jens Levisen said.
Henry Darling added another score on an assist from Jacob Larson and he assisted Jacob Brehmer for a goal with one minute left in the first half to give the Packers a 4-0 halftime lead.
Levisen was pleased with how Henry Darling, a junior, performed as he enters his second season as a starting varsity soccer player.
“That’s huge,” Levisen said. “A lot of these guys that were up front for us last year went to camps on their own to get where they want to be and I’m excited to see that.”
Austin, which had 17 shots on the night while holding K/M to 7 attempts, scored seven minutes into the second half when Peter Lindahl connected on a goal.
The Packers never scored again, and K/M scored its only goal with a minute left in the game.
“A few guys could only play one half because of missed practices,” Levisen said. “We got a little comfortable a little tired.”
Austin will host Caledonia at 1 p.m. Saturday.
