Two local residents have launched a business retailing trendy, modern clothing and shoes in brands not available elsewhere in Austin.
E&G Hook-Up opened its doors in February when the owners seized an opportunity after Footlocker closed at the Oak Park Mall.
“It’s kind of a hip-hop shop,” said Donny Zankou, 25, who co-owns E&G with Philippe Okorie, 21.
“They don’t have these in town,” Zankou said of their shop’s selection, which has appealed to young teens through 40-somethings.
E&G carries pants, shirts, hats, shoes, purses and sunglasses for men, women, girls and boys by brands like Gucci, Chanel, Nike, DC, Phat Farm, BCBG and more.
The first-time business owners are students at Riverland Community College. Zankou is majoring in computers, but is now considering a switch to business; Okorie studies business administration.
The men moved in with a cousin in Austin five years ago from France, where they spent most of their lives. They were born in Africa.
Zankou said they “can’t complain” about business so far.
“We like dressing up,” Okorie said with a laugh.
E&G Hook-Up is open from 12:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. It is located at First Street and Oakland Avenue West and can be reached at 434-4336.
