The city of Austin has gained a fifth signature for purchase of a property for the jail and justice center project.
Culligan Water Conditioning agreed Friday to sell its Second Street building for $135,000, according to community development director Craig Hoium, who said managers and owners have indicated that they’ll likely remain in Austin.
“What they indicated today is that they are going to lease a property until they can find something to purchase,” Hoium said.
Culligan representatives could not be reached for comment.
This leaves only Anytime Fitness, Steve’s Pizza and a corner apartment building as the structures still not acquired. City staff have been working with consultant Yaggy Colby since June to secure all properties on two square downtown blocks to house a $32 million jail and justice center.
In the last two months, Thirsty’s Bar, Showgirls Saloon, Farmers Insurance Group and Beltone Hearing Aid Center have all agreed to purchase packages. That brings the total to $926,000 in acquisition spending thus far. Hoium has announced a tentative $416,000 deal with Austin Medical Center for its property on the southerly block.
The city is also working with Yaggy Colby to move dozens of tenants from the only existing apartment building there.
“The tenants we’ve been working with, but we haven’t agreed to a price with the owner yet,” Hoium said. That building also includes Austin Office Products and a couple other small periphery business that will be eligible for relocation costs.
The city hopes to have the site prepared for construction by the close of their year. Staff’s work has also included environmental testing for toxic chemicals underground; studies have confirmed that no clean up is merited thus far.
The city has budgeted a total of $4.5 million of local and county money for site preparation, which includes acquisition, relocation, demolition and clean up.
