Austin girls soccer team opens season with loss at Mankato East

The Austin girls soccer team opened its season with a 3-2 loss at Mankato East Tuesday night.

The Cougars netted three goals in the second half after Austin goalie Mahing Garcia had made three key saves at the end of the first half.

“Although we did not play our best in the second half of the night, there were many positives for us to take away from the night,” Austin head coach Mark Raymond said. “We hope that this game will provide us with more insight into the things that we are doing well and the things that need to improve in order for us to finish these type of close games.”

The Packers (0-1 overall) started off strong when Anna Anderson scored on an assist from Hannah Voogd 20 minutes into the game and Tina Vorphal split a pair of defenders to score off a pass from Gracie Ewing.

“The night started well,” Austin head coach Raymond said. “We played a very aggressive offensive styled soccer by generating multiply attacks.
