An 8-year-old received five stitches after suffering a dog bite to the face, according to Austin Police Lt. John Mueller.

The child had been playing with the dog at a LeRoy residence around 12:45 p.m. Aug. 1 at the time of the injury.

Mueller said the dog owner believed the bite was accidental; the young girl reportedly had her face close to the face of the 1-year-old canine, which had never bitten before. The dog was described as medium-sized, brown and friendly, he said.

She was taken to Austin Medical Center by relatives, according to Mueller.
