The Cedars of Austin celebrated “America’s Day” July 3.

Cathy Eley, activity director, planned and organized the event held to celebrate Independence Day.

According to Ehley, the “Let Freedom Ring” was organized in 1963 by an Act of Congress, urging all Americans to ring bells 13 times at 2 p.m. July 4 to honor the nation’s independence.

What were Ehley’s thoughts about America’s Independence Day?

“I think we all need to go out and be patriotic for our country,” she said. “And to honor the people who have served in wars and paid the ultimate sacrifice so that we could be free.”

The Cedars of Austin has its share of “heroes,” who also honored America.

Gen Friedrich’s husband, John, was a prisoner of war for four months and 23 days — she has it memorized — at the end of World War II.

“I’m very proud of that flag,” she said, pointing to Old Glory waving in the Thursday afternoon breeze. “He’s 94 and very proud, too.”

Gretchen Wangen stood out in the crowd of The Cedars residents and employees participating in the pre-Independence Day festivities.

She wore a cap identifying her as “Navy Mom.” Wangen was a U.S. Navy Wave during World War II.

Orville Wangen was in the U.S. Marine Corps during WW II and earned the Bronze Star among other combat ribbons for his heroism. He died six years ago.

Gretchen moved into The Cedars 15 months ago.

“It’s nice to be recognized,” she said of the pre-Independence Day honors for America and its citizens.

Ehley’s bell-ringing ceremony began with the “Pledge of Allegiance;” songs were sung, including “Amazing Grace” and “America the Beautiful” and everyone recited the Declaration of Independence.

The ceremony concluded with the singing of the National Anthem and a prayer by the Rev. Hillmore Williams, co-pastor at Faith Evangelical Free Church of Austin.
