Project will help Arc stay afloat

The Hormel Foundation is working on a project to help Arc Mower County — a center that serves people with intellectual and developmental disabilities — expand in its current facility, a move that should be applauded.

Arc, which struggled following the move to the Mower County Senior Center following the 2004 flood, provides a vital service to adults in this county, and needs its own identity.

Approximately 300 members utilize Arc’s services, which range from the Special Olympics to dances to advocacy. Arc is a great service not only because it allows people with disabilities to interact with each other, but become productive and successful citizens in the community by means of volunteerism, recreation and stable jobs.

The proposed project would cost $661,760 for a 5,000 square-foot area, including an outside entrance, programming, bathrooms and office space, as well as updates to the senior center.

Arc, unfortunately, is sometimes confused with the senior center, of which it has no affiliation except for location. An expansion project would spotlight this nonprofit in the community.
